Cowell’s is often one of the better Santa Cruz choices for a first lesson when surf is small and organized. It is not automatically safe: cold water, crowds, changing swell and board control still matter.

Beach Street parking is heavily used. Follow current meters, posted limits and event restrictions.
Public beach access is available from the Beach Street and Municipal Wharf area.
Visitor facilities are available in the Main Beach/wharf district; confirm the closest open facility onsite.
Do not assume nearby dog-friendly West Cliff areas extend onto Cowell Beach. Follow beach signage.
Cowell’s Surf Shop publishes board and wetsuit rentals nearby; Richard Schmidt and Club Ed publish instruction.
Check NOAA tides, NWS marine hazards and buoy observations, then compare them with the actual location.
